Financial Aid
Research Assistantships
There are several sources of financial aid available to new and continuing graduate students at the School of Urban Affairs and Public Policy.
The primary type of aid awarded by to School of Urban Affairs and Public Policy graduate students is research assistantships (RAs). RAs are offered to students to work on research projects in one of the affiliated centers.
- Students awarded research assistantships are expected to work 20 hours a week in an affiliated research and public service center during the contract period from September 1 to May 31 and receive a stipend. Research assistants are required to work during winter session. A small number of senior research assistantships are awarded with a higher stipend amount.
- The University pays a portion of a Student Accident and Sickness Insurance Plan for the student. Please see http://www.udel.edu/shs/insurance/index.html for more information.
- RAs are awarded on the basis of merit. No financial need must be demonstrated for UD awards.
- U.S. citizens and international applicants are eligible.
- RA's are independent from University, state and federal educational financial aid programs.
- Research assistantships are generated by faculty and staff. RA stipends are funded by research grants and contracts from external funding agencies.
- To the extent possible, students are matched with projects based on their stated career goals and specialization/concentration. However, because of external project constituencies and funding sources, sometimes projects don’t exactly match students’ specializations/ concentrations. While centers attempt to accommodate students’ research and project interests, students may help generate aid as well. All students are encouraged to pursue their area of interest through courses in the School of Urban Affairs and Public Policy and other University departments, internships, and independent study.
- According to the College of Human Services, Education and Public Policy, students with research assistantships must register for a minimum of nine credit hours.
- Research assistantships are renewed subject to availability of funds and to satisfactory academic progress and completion of any required project work. All centers and academic programs review students annually. Continuing students must complete a Financial Aid Request form in the spring for the following year and submit a Plan of Study form. Renewal letters are distributed in the summer.
- Research assistants are not to hold outside employment.
- International students are eligible for research assistantships.
